Oprah has done so much for books and continues that tradition with her book selections throughout the year.  I guess we can forgive her shameless self promotion on her favorite things list which has the O’s Guide to Life as one of her picks.

It is hard to fault her as she did autograph each one for those lucky enough to be in the Macon, Georgia audience the day she announced the list.  They chose this market for this much sought after show this year because it has been the top market since the show was launched.

Keep up the book picks Oprah.

Want an authority on books to recommend a few? You can consult Sunday’s posting of the bestsellers to be your guide.  With the wide varieties of categories listed, you are sure to find something for everyone on your list, http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books/bestseller/.

Additionally, the New York Times has been kind enough to narrow their 100 notable books for 2007 to a top ten list.  This is once again perfect timing for the gift giving season,  http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_5949712_6?ie=UTF8&docId=1000172381&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=034R5JKTPDKY0NA5JGGH&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=338900101&pf_rd_i=283155.

is a book that you might have read or most likely you recognize the title from the trailer you saw the last time you were at the movies.  The movie adaptation stars actress Hillary Swank.

I don’t usually read books that have been turned into movies and vice versa.  When I saw the trailer for this movie I wanted to read this book.  Not sure of the reason, but I literally ran to the store to pick it up.  I was nervous that the book was 470 pages and the movie opens on December 21st, “did I have enough time I wondered”? If you have tuned in before to 24/8 previoulsy, I have admitted on more then one occassion that I am a slow reader.

I am pleased to say I finished the book today and I just loved it, with time to spare. The writing is brilliant and I recommend this read to one and all.  I am so interested to see the movie and can only hope the adaptation parallels the book.

One caveat: I am usually blue over the holidays and this year seems to be no exception.  While I could not wait to read the book each day, I had a growing suspicion it was adding to my saddness.  I think that it did make me sad everyday but it was also beautiful and I had to keep reading it.  Now that I am finished, I will be sad tomorrow because there is no more to read.

Many movies start as books that are optioned for this purpose.  The authors are normally delighted when someone options their book.  For a list of books compiled by Border’s that are at the movies go to, http://www.bordersmedia.com/features/bookstomovies/default.asp.

On Friday, November 30th the 24/8 Book Club had another event out and around town at the Excalibur night club.  Our featured author was Jenniffer Weigel whose first book, Stay Tuned was the backdrop for the night’s discussion.

If you missed our fantastic night be sure pick up a copy of Stay Tuned it is a heart felt biography, memoir, tribute, self help, spiritual and more book with so much to share.  We are so fortunate Jen has chosen to share her personal story with us.  You will laugh and you will cry as you go with Jen on this journey to connect.

For anyone that has suffered the loss of a parent, spouse, sibling or friend it is a great read.  It is so real it will touch their hearts and souls and it is just the right holiday book for this time of the year that can be so blue.
